CAD - Computer Aided Design - Using computers to design products. CAD systems are high-speed workstations or desktop computers with CAD software

CAGR - Compound Annual Growth Rate - the year over year growth rate applied to an investment or other aspect of a firm using a base amount

CAP - Competitive Access Provider - organization that competes with the established telecommunications provider in an area

CATV - Community Antenna Television - The original name for cable TV, which used a single antenna at the highest location in the community

CDMA - Code Division Multiple Access - one of three wireless telephone transmission technologies. It is a radio multiple access system which uses spread spectrum technology. The system transmits digitized data by assigning a code to each signal on a per-call basis. The signals are then spread over a wide frequency band of several MHz

cdma2000 - 3G technology that increases data transmission rates for existing CDMA (cdmaOne) network operators. cdma2000 Phase 1 provides 144 Kbps of data integrated with voice and is known by several names: IS-2000, MC-1X, IMT-CDMA MultiCarrier 1X and 1XRTT. Phase 2 increases the data rate to 2 Mbps and is based on QUALCOMM's HDR technology. 1XEv-Data Voice (DV) integrates voice and data. 1XEv-Data Only, which is sometimes called Phase 1+, provides 2 Mbps for data only

cdmaOne - Also known as IS-95, the CDMA standard for digital cellular in the U.S. that operates in the 800MHz band and the 1.9GHz PCS band

CDN - Content Delivery Network - system of distributed content on a large intranet or the public Internet in which copies of content are replicated and cached throughout the network. When content is replicated throughout the country, or throughout the world, users have quicker access to it than if it resides on one Web site

CDPD - Cellular Digital Packet Data - a packet data protocol standard for sending wireless data

CEBus - Consumer Electronic Bus - An EIA standard for a control network for the home using a variety of media, including AC power lines, telephone wire, coaxial cable or wireless. CEBus uses the Common Application Language (CAL) to communicate commands over the lines, and the Home Plug & Play specification provides a uniform implementation for using CAL with household objects. The CEbus Industry Council (CIC) supports this effort, and information can be obtained at www.cebus.org.

CEO - Chief Executive Officer

CFML - ColdFusion Markup Language - An extension of HTML that provides a set of tags for dynamically including data from databases within a set of Web pages without extensive programming

CGI - Common Gateway Interface - A standard way for Web servers to pass a Web user's request to an application program and to receive data back to forward to the user

CISC - Complex Instruction Set Computers - processors that can handle numerous instructions

 

 

CLECs - Competitive Local Exchange Carrier - an organization offering local telephone services. Most fall into the telecommunications service organization category, but this could also apply to any company, university or city government that supplies its own dial tone capabilities. Examples are Rythms, Covad and Qwest.

CMOS - Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor - a type of integrated circuit for digital processors and memories. CMOS uses PMOS (Positive channel MOS)and NMOS (N-channel MOS) transistors wired together to in a way that uses less power than PMOS-only or NMOS-only circuits.

CMRS - Commercial Mobile Radio Service - an FCC designation for any carrier or licensee whose wireless network is connected to the public switched telephone network and/or is operated for profit.

COCC - Constellation Operations Control Center

COFDM - Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing - The Eureka 147 DAB specification consists of multiple carriers assembled using a COFDM within a 1.536 MHz channel bandwidth

.com - indicates that a company (nike.com) is a commercial organization on the Internet

CO - Central Office - local telephone company switching center

COM - Component Object Model - Microsoft's framework for developing and supporting program component objects. Aimed at providing similar capabilities to those defined in CORBA, the framework for interoperation of distributed objects in a network. COM provides the underlying services of interface negotation, life cycle management, licensing and event services

CORBA - Common Object Request Broker Architecture - enables pieces of programs, called objects, to communication with eachother regardless of what programming language they were written in or what operating system they are running on

 

 

CPE - Customer Premise Equipment - Communications equipment that resides on the customer's premises

CPNI - Customer Proprietary Network Information - the carrier's data about a specific customer's service and usage. The FCC restricts CPNI usage in some marketing cases

CPS - Cable Programming Service

CPU - Central Processing Unit - brains of the computer - the processor where most of the calculations take place

CRM - Customer Relationship Management

CRT - Cathode Ray Tube - technology used in most TVs and computer display screens - works by moving an electron beam back/forth across the back of a screen, which lights up phosphor dots on the inside of the glass tube - illuminating the active portions of the screen

CTC - Competitive Telecommunications Carrier

CTIA - Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association - a trade group that represents cellular, PCS, and enhanced specialized mobile radio carriers. www.wow-com.com
