Acronym 's
Choice: FC or FH
or FS
FCC - Federal Communications Commission
- a government agency that encourages competition in all communications
markets and protects the public interests. The FCC develops and
implements policy concerning interstate and international communications
by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable. www.fcc.gov
FCIF - Full Common Intermediate Format
FDA - U.S. Food and Drug Administration
- organization that promotes public health. www.fda.gov
FDD - Frequency Division Duplex - transmission
method that separates the transmitting and receiving channels with
a guard band (some amount of spectrum that acts as a buffer or insulator)
FDDI - Fiber Distribution Data Interface
- LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid 1990s.
It is an ANSI standard token passing network that uses optical fiber
cabling and transmits at 100 Mbits/sec up to 10 kilometers. FDDI
provides network services at the same level as Ethernet and Token
Ring (OSI layers 1 and 2)
FDI - Foreign Direct Investment
FDMA - Frequcny Division Multiple Access
- technology used in the analog cellular telephone network that
divides the spectrum into 30KHz channels
FEC - Forward Error Correction - An IBOC
DAB method to minimize the effects of multipath. In the event that
multiple subchannels and wideband subchannel modulation fail to
prevent bit errors, FEC is capable of correcting the errors, and
interleaving is used to distribute these errors so as to optimize
the effectiveness of FEC.
FFT - Fast Fourier Transforms - class
of algorithms used in digital signal processing that break down
complex signals into elementary components
FHMA - Frequency Hopping Multiple Access
- a digital technology used in Geotek Communication's specialized
mobile radio network
FHSS - Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum
- One variety of radio transmission methods that continuously change
frequencies or signal patterns which continuously changes the center
frequency of a conventional carrier several times per second according
to a pseudo-random set of channels, while chirp spread spectrum
changes the carrier frequency. Because a fixed frequency is not
used, illegal monitoring of spread spectrum signals is extremely
difficult, if not downright impossible depending on the particular
method
FLOPS - Floating Point Operations Per
Second Fps - Frames per Second
FM - Frequency Modulation - transmission
technique that blends the data signal into a carrier by varying
(modulating) the frequency of the carrier
FQDM - Fully Qualified Domain Name
FSA - Fabless Semiconductor Association
FSAN - Full Service Access Networks Group
- an international group of network operators and vendors working
to define industry standards for broadband access architectures.
The group's goal is a full spectrum of economically viable broadband
services with open interfaces to promote competition and reduce
costs through mass production.
FSK - Frequency Shift Keying - simple
modulation technique that merges binary data into a carrier - it
creates only two changes in frequency: one for 0, another for 1
FTP - File Transfer Protocol - allows
you to transfer files over the Internet - requires user authentication
FTTC - Fiber-to-the-Curb - an architecture
that allows local broadband access to the home through an outside
plant unshielded twisted pair (UTP) wiring and in-house coaxial
cables or new UTP wiring.
FTTH - Fiber-to-the-Home - installation
of optical fiber from the carrier directly into the home or office
FWA - Fixed Wireless Access - also known
as wireless local loop
