GEIA - Government Electronics and Information Technology Association - government market sector of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA). www.geia.org

GEO - Geostationary Satellites - Provide regional coverage, has a 22,000-mile orbit, is a geosynchronous orbit, has a 640 ms round-trip delay, needs a minimum of 8 satellites to cover the region.

GigaPOP - GIGAbit Point of Presence - high-speed switching point being developed by universities across the U.S. as part of the Internet2 project

GigE - Gigabit Ethernet - Ethernet technology that raises transmission speed to 1 Gbps. It is used primarily for backbones

GII - Global Information Infrastructure

GIS - Geographic Information Systems - computer systems capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geogrphically referenced info



 

GMPCS - Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite - a future mobile satellite system that will privde global wireless phone service

GMSK - Gaussian filtered Minimum Shift Keying

GNOME - GNU Object Modeling Environment - GUI-based user interface for Linux developed as part of the GNU project. It provides an alternate to the KDE interface

GPRS - General Packet Radio Services - uses the mobile phone network to carry data whenever circuits are not tied up by people talking. Because the ddata is packetised, there does not need to be a one-to-one connection bbetween sender and recipient. Devices can always on and always looking for this data

GPS - Global Positioning Systems - a seriers of 24 geosynchronous satellites that continually transmit their position. GPS is used in personal tracking, navigation, and automatic vehical location technolgies


 

GSAM - Generalized Sequential Access Method - batch processing access method for IMS that allows sequential files to be treated as IMS databases

GSM - Global System for Mobile Communications - a digital mobile telephone system widely used in Europe and other parts of the world.

GSMP - General Switch Management Protocol - call setup protocol used in the IP Switch

GSM-Plus - an enhanced version of GSM technology that will be developed to meet IMT-2000 capabilities

GSM-R - GSM for railway networks, uses standard base station and switching infrastructure to provide fast data transmission for railways

GUI - Graphic User Interface - a computing term referring to an operating system or environment that displays options on the screen as graphical symbols, icons or photographs

GUID - Globally Unique IDentifier - unique number used to identify a COM object. It is computed by adding the time and date to the network adapter's internal serial number
