HCL - Hardware Compatibility List

HDCD - High Definition Compact Disc

HDML - Handheld Device Markup Language - derived from hypertext markup language, this programming language allows Internet access from wireless devices such as handheld personal computers and smart phones

HDSL - High-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line

HDTV - High Definition Television

HFC - Hybrid Fiber Coax - implementation of a community cable system which partitions the sections from the head end to fiber optics, and the portions to the homes, in coax cable - improves reliability and makes it easier to provide two way services including support for cable modems


HiperLAN - A wireless LAN protocol developed by ETSI that provides a 23.5 Mbps data rate in the 5GHz band. It is similar to Ethernet, but unlike 802.11a, the wireless Ethernet standard at the same rate, HIPERLAN/1 provides quality of service (QoS), which lets traffic be prioritized

HLR - Home Location Register - a database residing in a local wireless network that checks the identity of a local subscriber

HomePNA - Home Phoneline Networking Alliance - a group that includes Tut Systems, Epigram, Intel, IBM, and HP that is working on a standard for existing copper telephone wires that allows for products from multiple vendors to work together. www.homepna.org

HRFWG - HomeRF Working Group - group that is developing the foundation for a range of interoperable consumer devices by establishing an open industry specification for wireless digital communication between PCs and consumer electronic devices anywhere in and around the home (SWAP). www.homerf.org

HTMA - High-Tech Marketing Alliance - marketing forum geared towards the high-tech industry - formed to educate and assist high-tech marketing professionals and offer a forum to share information and explore common industry issues/concerns. www.cema.org

HTML - Hypertext Markup Language - plain text codes that define the structure of a page

HTTP - Hypertext Transport Protocol - defines how messages are formatted/transmitted to allow Web browsers to communicate with Web servers
