IBAC - In-band/adjacent channel

IBOC - In-band/on-channel - Broadcasting technology that uses current AM/FM spectrum and station assignments to transmit digital signals.

iCAIR - International Center for Advanced Internet Research - organization whose mission is to accelerate innovation and global communications through advanced Internet technologies. www.icair.org

ICANN - Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - non-profit, international association founded in 1998 to be the successor to IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority), which manages Internet addresses, domain names and paramters associated with Internet protocols (port numbers, router protocols, multicast addresses, etc.). ICANN provides a list of accredited registrars in addition to Network Solutions that accept domain registrations

ICC - Internet Cable Corporation

ICMP - Internet Control Message Protocol - a maintenance protocol used between two systems to share status and error information

Ics - Interactive Circuits

IDE - Integrated Drive Electronics - standard electronic interface used between a computer motherboard's data paths or bus and the computer's disk storage devices

iDEN - Integrated Digital Enhanced Network - a Motorola enhanced mobile radio network technology that integrates two-way radio, telephone, text messaging and data transmission into a single network

IEC - International Engineering Consortium - consortium that conducts a range of university and industry cooperative programs consisting of educational forums, workshops, research studies, publications and Web education. www.iec.org

IEEE - International Electrical and Electronics Engineers - institute which promotes the engineering process of developing, integrating, and applying knowledge about electrical and information technologies and sciences. www.ieee.org

IETF - Internet Engineering Task Force - volunteer organization of working groups dedicated to identifying problems and proposing technical solutions for the Internet - www.ietf.org


 

IGES - Initial Graphics Exchange Specification - ANSI graphics file format for three-dimensional wire frame models

IIOP - Internet InterORB Protocol - a protocol developed by the Object Management Group (OMG)

ILECs - Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers

IMT-2000 - International Mobile Telecommunications 2000 defines third generation mobile systems which are scheduled to start service in the year 2000. These systems will provide access, by means of one or more radio links, to a wide range of telecommunication services

InterNIC - Internet Network Information Center - registers domain names and assigns valid IP addresses to users and companies on the Internet

I/O - I/O devices are input and/or output mechanisms for transferring real world data in/out of a VPLus design

 

 

IP - Internet Protocol - one of the two main parts of the TCP/IP protocol - delivers TCP and UDP packets across a network

IRTF - Internet Research Task Force - An organization of working groups involved in researching future Internet tecnologies. The IRTF is managed by the IRTF Chair in conjunction with the Internet Research Steering Group (IRSG). The IRTF Chair is appointed by the Internet Architecture Board (IAB). When the technologies are deemed ready for development, they are transferred to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) - www.irtf.org

IRQ - Interrupt Request

IS - Interim Standard - a designation of the American National Standards Institute - usually followed by a number - that refers to an accepted industry protocol (IS-95, IS-136 etc.)

IS-41 - the network standard that allows all switches to exchange information about subscribers

IS-54 - the first generation of the digital standard time division multiple access technology

IS-95 - the standard for code division multiple access, also known as cdmaOne

IS-136 - the latest generation of the digital standard time division multiple access technology

IS-661 - North American standard for 1.9Ghz wireless spread spectrum radio-frequency access technology developed by Omnipoint - based on a composite of code divsion multiple access and time division multiple access technologies

ISA - ISA bus - Industry Standard Architecture - standard bus (computer interconnection) architecture that is associated with the IBM AT motherboard

ISAPI - Internet Server API - A programming interface on Internet Information Server (IIS), Microsoft's Web server. Using ISAPI function calls, Web pages can invoke programs that are written as DLLs on the server, typically to access data in a database. IIS comes with a DLL that allows embedded queries to access ODBC-compliant databases. ISAPI is an alternative to using CGI scripts on Microsoft Web servers

 

 

ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Network - an advanced, high-capacity wireline technology used for high-speed data transfer

ISM Band - Industrial, Scientific and Medical Band - A part of the radio spectrum that can be used without a license in most countries (contains bands in the 902-928MHz, 2.4-2.4835GHz, 5.725-5.850GHz ranges)

ISO - International Standards Organization - An organization that sets international standards - the U.S. member body is ANSI. ISO deals with all fields except electrical and electronics, which is governed by the older International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It carries out its work through more than 160 technical committees and 2,300 subcommittees and working groups and is made up of standards organizations from more than 75 countries

ISP - Internet Service Provider - an organization that provides Internet access to businesses and consumers

ISS - Instruction Set Simulator ISV - Independent Software Vendor

ITA - Industrial Telecommunications Association - a Washington, DC trade group serving private wireless licensees such as airlines and oil companies

ITU - International Telecommunication Union - an intergovernmental organization through which public and private organizations develop telecommunications. It is responsible for adopting international treaties, regulations, and standards governing telecommunications. www.itu.int

ITU-R TG 8/1 - The United States Internaional Telecommunications Union-Radiocommunications Task Group 8/1 - They will help to define the radio aspects of the IMT-2000
