LAN - Local Area Network - communications
network that servers users within a small geographical area, such
as a building or complex. Network is made up of servers, workstations,
a network operating system and a communications link.
LBRV - Low Bit Rate Voice - A voice sampling
technique that analyzes each 15-30 millisecond speech segment independently
and converts it into a 30-byte frame
LCC - Leadless Chip Carrier - A chip
package that uses flat metal pads that make contact with the socket
or circuit board
LCD - Liquid Cyrstal Display - the technology used for displays
in notebook and other small computers - allows displays to be thinner
than cathode ray tube technology - it consumes less power than LED
and gas display displays because they work on the principle of blocking
light rather than emitting it
LEC - Local Exchange Carrier - an authorized carrier that has been
commissioned to provide local voice-level telecommunication services
within a predetermined area
LED - Light Emitting Diode - adisplay
technology that uses a semiconductor diode that emits light when
charged. It is used in readouts and on/off lights in a myriad of
electronic appliances and as a light source for fiber-optic transmission.
They are typically used with lower-bandwidth multimode fibers.
LEO - Low Earth Orbit Satellite - Has global service, a 600 mile
orbit, is a non-geosynchronous orbit, has a 120 ms round-trip delay,
needs a minimum of 48 satellites to cover the globe
LMCC - Land Mobile Communications Council
- a trade group of frequency coordinators and associations serving
private users and commercial operators
LMDS - Local Multipoint Distribution Services - Fixed wireless transmission
technology that provides integrated, two-way digital distribution
of multimedia services using a combination of large, high-quality
bandwidth similar to fiber optic cable, yet delivered via a small
rooftop antenna. Works in the 28GHz range in the U.S. and 24-40GHz
overseas
LNP - Local Number Portability - a subscriber's ability to switch
local or wireless carriers and still retain the same phone number,
as is possible now with long distance carriers. Wireless carriers
will not be required to offer LNP until March 2000
LOD - Level of Detail LZW - Lempel-Zif-Welsh - a popular data compression
technology developed in 1977 - the compression algorithm used in
GIF graphics file format
LTO - Linear Tape Open - Family of open
magnetic tape standards developed by HP, IBM and Seagate that are
licensed to third-party vendors - has two formats that share common
components such as read/write head, track layout and servo technology.
The Accelis format uses a dual-hub, cassette-style cartridge with
a midpoint load very similar to Magstar MP. The Ultrium format uses
a single hub and a wider tape like regular Magstar
LU 6.2 - SNA protocol that establishes
a session between two programs. It allows peer-to-peer communications
as well as interaction between programs running in the host with
PCs, Macs and midrange computers
