Aims to provide uniform/open connectivity for other mobile communications

MAN - Metro Area Network - communications

or
suburb.

MEMS - Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems

- Provides global service, has a 6,000-12,000-mile orbit, is non-geosynchronous
orbit, has a 250

the

MIN - Mobile Indentification Number
- uniquely identifies a mobile unit within a wireless carrier's
network - often can be dialed
from
other wireless or wireline networks (differs from the electronic
serial number, which is the unit number assigned by a phone
manufacturer)
MIPS - Million Instructions Per Second
- a general measure of computing performance - for large servers/mainframes
it
is also
a way to measure
the cost of computing, the more MIPS delivered for the money,
the better the value
MLP - Meridian Lossless Packing
MMDS
- Multipoint Multichannel Distribution Service - in 1983 the Commission
reassigned eight channels from the Instructional Television
Fixed Service (ITFS) to MDS. These, eight channels make up the
MMDS - a digital wireless transmission system that works in the
2.2-2.4GHz
range. Frequently, MDS and MMDS channels are used in combination
with ITFS channels to provide video entertainment programming to
subscribers. This service is known as "Wireless Cable"

MPLS - Multiprotocol Lable Switching
- in an MPLS networking, packets are assigned a label (by a label
edge router) and forwarded along a label switch path where each
(label switch) router makes forwarding decisions based on the contents
of the label. One of the promises of MPLS is the ability to create
end-to-end circuits, with specific performance characteristics,
across any type of transport medium, eliminating the need for overlay
networks or Layer 2 only control mechanisms.
MRAM - Magnetic Random Access Memory
- arrays of magnetic memory cells in which the information is stored as the magnetization
direction of tiny ferromagnetic elements.
MSA - Metropolitan Statistical Area
- the coverage area of a city as in a cellular network (US Census
Burea term)
MS-DOS - Microsoft Disk Operating System
MSO - Multiple System Operator - a major
cable TV organization that has franchises in multiple locations

in the US
MTSO - Mobile Telephone Switching Office
- the electronic middleman between cell sites and the public switched
telephone network, processing traffic back and forth
MVPD - Multichannel
Video Program Distributors - includes DBS (Direct Broadcast Satellite),
Home satellite dishes, wireless cable systems
(using MMDS - Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service, LMDS
(Local Multipoint Distribution Service), and SMATV (Satellite
Master Antenna Television)
