OC - Optical Carrier - the transmission
speeds defined in the SONET specification. OC defines transmission
by optical devices (STS is the electrical equivalent). Examples
include:
OC-1 = STS-1 = 51.84 Mbps
OC-12 = STS-12 = 622.08 Mbps
OC-48 = STS-48 = 2488.32 Mbps)
ODBC - Open Database Connectivity - A
database programming interface (Microsoft) that provides a common
language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.
ODMA - Opportunity Driven Multiple Access
OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer
OFDM - Orthogonal Frequency Division
Multiplexer - An IBOC DAB method to minimize the effects of
multipath. OFDM stretches
the duration
of each audio symbol by transmitting more bits per symbol period.
By stretching the symbol period, multiple subchannel modulation
reduces the effects of delayed multipath radio signals interfering
onto nearby audio symbols.
OIF - Optical
Internetworking Forum - formed to accelerate the development
of a standard set of optical interfaces
to promote
interoperability
of high-speed data gear and optical networking equipment.
OLAP
- On-Line Analytical Processing
OLE - Object Linking and Embedding
- Microsoft's framework for a compound document technology.
A compound document
is something
like
a display desktop that can contain visual and information
objects of all kinds. Each desktop object is an independent
program
entity that can interact with a user and communicate
with other desktop
objects. Part of Microsoft's ActiveX technologies, OLE
takes advantage
and is part of a larger, more general concept, the COM
and its distributed version DCOM.
OLED - Optical Light Emitting Diode
- an electronic device made by placing a series of organic thin
films between two conductors. When electrical current is applied,
a bright light is emitted.
OLTP
- On-Line Transaction Processing
OpenGL - software
interface for applications to generate interactive 2D/3D computer
graphics
OSGI - Open Service Gateway Initiative
- group promoting a standard set of Java-based APIs that enable
just-in-time value added media services that will form the basis
of a service gateway specification (participants include Sun,
IBM,
Sony, Oracle, Philips, Cisco and Motorola)
OSI - Open Systems Interconnect
model - one of the oldest and most popular reference models
- created in teh late 1970s by the International
Standards Organization (ISO)
OSS - Operational Support System
- the back office operational support software including billing
for telecommunications
systems
OTARD - Off The Air Reception Device
- antennas and satellite dishes
OTASP - Over-the-Air Service Provisioning
- the ability of carriers to add new types of services to a customer's
handset by using the wireless network instead of requiring the customer
to bring in the phone for reprogramming
