RADSL - Rate Adaptive DSL - version of
ADSL that adjusts speeds based on signal quality
RAID - Redundant Array of Independent
(or Inexpensive) Disks - A disk subsystem that increases performance
and/or provides fault tolerance. RAID is a set of two or more hard
disks and a specialized disk controller that contains the RAID functionality.
Developed initially for servers and stand-alone disk storage systems,
RAID is becoming available in desktop PCs primarily for fault tolerance.
The "I" originally stood for Inexpensive, but some sources
now prefer Independant, since RAID systems can cost quite a bit.
RAM - Random Access Memory - when a CPU
sends/receives data from memory chips, they hold the data temporarily
while passing the info back/forth from the CPU - the data memory
in the chips is dependent on the continuous application of electrical
power - this type of memory is called RAM
RARP - Reverse Address Resolution Protocol - required when a computer
must determine an IP address when it already has a physical hardware
address
RBDS - RadioBroadcast Data System - The radio standard used in Europe
RBOC - Regional Bell Operating Company
- the list of such companies includes Bell Atlantic, US West, Ameritech,
Southwestern Bell and BellSouth
R/C - Resistance and Capacitance
RDBMS - Relational Database Management System - Fully catalog driven
database management system for Perl 5 and mini-SGL.
RDRAM - Rambus DRAM - A dynamic RAM chip
technology. Base RDRAM was introduced with speeds up to 600 MBytes/sec.
Concurrent RDRAM increased speed to 700 MBps and Direct RDRAM boosted
speed to 1.6 GBps. Concurrent RDRAMs have been used in video games,
but Direct RDRAMs are used in computers
RFCs - Internet Request for Comments - a proposal presented by an
individual or company to the Internet community to debate
RISC - Reduced Instruction Set Computer - type of microprocessor
that recognizes a limited number of instructions
ROI - Return on Investment
ROM - Read Only Memory - A memory chip
that permanently stores instructions and data. Its contents are
created at the time of manufacture and cannot be altered. ROM chips
are used to store control routines in personal computers (ROM BIOS),
peripheral controllers and other electronic equipment
RP - Rapid Prototyping
RSA - Rural Service Area - designation
of a non-metropolitan area covered by a cellular license
RSVP - ReSerVation Protocol - A communications
protocol that signals a router to reserve bandwidth for realtime
transmission. RSVP is designed to clear a path for audio and video
traffic eliminating annoying skips and hesitations
RTL - Register Transfer Level - specification for a digital electronic
circuit that defines how to store circuit state (data) in the registers
and how to compute new values in each clock cycle. RTL sits in between
behavioral level and gate level specifications. Behavioral level
defines what function the circuit is to perform, and gate level
defines the actual components and interconnects. The most popular
languages for writing RTL are Verilog and VHDL
RTOS - Real-Time Operating System - operating system designed for
use in a realtime computer system
RTP - Real Transport Protocol - IP protocol
that supports realtime transmission of voice and video. An RTP packet
rides on top of UDP and includes timestamping and synchronization
information in its header for proper reassembly at the receiving
end. Realtime Control Protocol (RTCP) is a companion protocol that
is used to maintain QoS. RTP nodes analyzes network conditions and
periodically send each other RTCP packets that report on network
congestion
RTSP - Real-Time Streaming Protocol - specification for transmitting
audio, video and 3-D animation over the Internet, developed by Netscape
and Progressive Networks
RTT - Radio Transmission Technology
