Satcos - Service Providing Satellite Companies

SBCA - Satellite Broadcasters Association - national trade organization representing the satellite industry. www.sbca.org

SCMS - Serial Copyright Management System - a system that prevents unlimited digital copying of CD's and other prerecorded media.

SDH - Synchronous Digital Hierarchy - the European counterpart to SONET (SONET defined below)

SDMI - Secure Digital Music Initiative - an intiative from the recording industry proposing to make music available for download from the Internet

SET - Secure Electronic Transactions - Mastercard and Visa security standard that makes use of technology from Netscape's SSL, Microsoft's STT, and Terisa Systems' S-HTTP

SGI - Silicon Graphics Inc. - company that provides hard/software. www.sgi.com

SIG - Special Interest Group

SIM - Subscriber Identity Module - synonymous with smart card

SIMD - Single Instruction-stream Multiple data-stream - one model of parallel computation

6DOF - Six Degrees of Freedom - The amount of motion supported in a robotics or virtual reality system. Six degrees provides x, y and z (horizontal, vertical and depth) and pitch, yaw and roll.

SMIL - Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language

SMP - Symmetric Multiprocessing - computer architecture that provides fast performance by making multiple CPUs available to complete processes simultaneously

SMS - Short Message Service - the electronic messages on a wireless network, such as those used in a two-way paging system

SMTP - Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - protocol used to send/receive mail over the Internet

SNMP - Simple Network Management Protocol - protocol used for managing SNMP-compliant network devices, such as hubs and routers

SOC - System-On-a-Chip

SONET - Synchronous Optical NETwork - a fiber-optic transmission system for high-speed digital traffic. SONET is an intelligent system that provides advanced network management and a standard optical interface, it uses a self healing ring architecture that is able to reroute traffic is a line goes down. SRAM - Static Random Access Memory - memory that is faster/more reliable than DRAM (dynamic RAM) - it is called static because it does not need to be refreshed like DRAM

SSL - Secure Sockets Layer - a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. It works by using a private key to encrypt data that's tranferred over the SSL connection.

STB - Set-Top Box - cable TV box that sits on top of the TV set. A variety of new set-top boxes are emerging for Internet TV and other interactive services

SURA - Southern University Research Association - consortium of 46 universities that serves as an entity through which colleges, universities and other organizations can cooperate with one another and with the government in acquiring, developing and using laboratories, machines, and other research facilities to further knowledge in the physical, biological and other natural sciences and engineering. www.sura.org

SWAP - Shared Wireless Access Protocol - a standard developed by the HomeRF group for wireless home networking - a wireless local-area network that supports data as well as voice by adopting part of the European standard for the cordless phone, DECT
