T1 - T=telephone link, 1=the actual
speed of the link in terms of how big the pipe is. So T1=1.5Mbps
and T3=45Mbps. The T1 carrier is the most commonly used digital
line in the United States, Canada and Japan. In these countries
it carriers 24 pulse code modulation signals using time-division
multiplexing at an overall rate of 1.544Mbps. It uses copper wire
and spans distances within and between major metropolictan areas.
TCO - Total Cost of Ownership
TCP - Transmission Control Protocol - connection oriented protocol
that ensures data from the source will arrive at the destination
in the correct order
TCP/IP - Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol - allows
protocol to not be tied to any one single computer or communications
technology
TDM - Time Division Multiplexing - technology
that transmits multiple signals simultaneously over a single transmission
path. Each lower-speed signal is time sliced into one high-speed
transmission. The receiving end divides the single streams back
into their original signals.
TDMA - Time Division Multiple Access - a digital air interface technology
used in cellular, PCS, and EMSR networks
TETRA - Terrestrial Trunked Radio - an
open digital trunked radio standard defined by the European Telecommunications
Standardization Institute
TFT - Thin Film Transistor
TFTP - Trivial File Transfer Protocol - similar to FTP, but doesn't
require user authentication
Third Generation (3G) - a new standard
that promises to offer increased capacity and high-speed data applications
up to 2Mbps - it will also integrate pico-, mico- and macrocellular
technology and allow global roaming
TIA - Telecommunications Industry Association
- a trade group representing manufacturers and suppliers of communications
and information technology products - it is a standards-developing
organization accredited by ANSI. www.tiaonline.org
TLA - Three Letter Acronym
TLS - Transport Layer Security
TMDS - Transmission Minimized Differential Signaling
TM-UWB - Time-Modulated Ultra-Wide Band - a wireless technology
that broadens bandwidth. Developed by Time Domain, TM-UWB uses short,
coded pulses tranmitting over a wide range of frequencies, making
it useful for a wide range of applications from networking to through-the-wall
radar and secure communications
TPC - Transaction Processing Performance Council - De facto industry
standards body for OLTP (On-Line Transaction Processing) performance
TR4.5 - Telecommunications Industry Association
(TIA) physical layer specification for interfacing between WAN and
Home LAN technologies to allow interconnection between different
technologies in the home gateway
TTL - Time To-Live
