W3C - World Wide Web Consortium - oversees developments in Web standards. www.w3c.org

WAIS - Wide Area Information Server - a server that maintains an index of documents on hundreds of servers

WAN - Wide Area Network - communications network that covers wide geographic area, such as a state or country.

WAP - Wireless Application Protocol - an open global specification that empowers mobile users with wireless devices to access and interact with information and services instantly

WCDMA - Wideband Code Division Multiple Access - This system offers transmission quality roughly equal to ISDN, high-speed data communications, ability to meet the demands of mobile multimedia, and increased transmission capacity.

WCS - Wireless Communications Services - frequencies in the 2.3Ghz band designated for general fixed wireless use

 

 

WDF - Wireless Data Forum - an industry group dedicated to promoting wireless data

WDM - Wavelength Division Multiplexing - technology that uses multiple lasers to transmit several wavelengths of light simultaneously over a single optical fiber. Companies have introduced WDM and DWDM (dense WDM) systems that can support more than 150 wavelengths, each carrying up to 10 Gbps.

WIN - Wireless Intelligent Network - a wireless switched network that allows carriers to provide enhanced and customized services for mobile phones

WINS - Windows Internet Naming Service

Wireless IP - the packet data protocol standard for sending wireless data over the Internet

 

 

WLAN - Wireless Local Area Network - a flexible data communication system implemented as an extension to or as an alternative for a wired LAN within a building or campus - it uses a radio frequency (RF) technology to transmit/receive data over the air, minimizing the need to wired connections

Wireless PBX - equipment that allows employees or customers within a building or limited area to use wireless handsets connected to an office's private branch exchange system

WLL - Wireless Local Loop - a fixed service that competes with or substitutes for local wireline phone service
